What is the Current Status Update on Social Networking?



Facebook has grown to more than 800 million active users, adding more than 200 million in a single year. Twitter now has 100 million active users and LinkedIn has over 64 million users in America alone.
A few interesting take outs for social media statistics in 2012:


Facebook Statistics 2012: 
  • An average Facebook user has 130 friends and likes 80 pages 
  • 56% of consumer say that they are more likely recommend a brand after becoming a fan 
  • Each week on Facebook more than 3.5 billion pieces of content are shared 
  • Of the active adult users of Facebook, 66% reported they did not know privacy controls existed on Facebook and/or they did not know how to use the privacy controls. 
Twitter Statistics 2012: 
  • 34% of marketers have generated leads using Twitter 
  • 55% of Twitter users access the platform via their mobile (1)
Teen Statistics:
  • 69% of social media-using teens think that peers are mostly kind to each other on social networking sites, however, 88% of teens have seen someone be mean or cruel to another person on a social networking site. (Pew Research Center)
  • 12% of teens say they witnessed cruel behavior "frequently" on social networking sites.
  •  65% of social media-using teens have had an experience on a social networking site that made them feel good about themselves.
  •  41% of social media-using teens have experienced at least one negative outcome as a result of using a social networking site.
  •  25% have had an experience that led to a face-to-face argument or confrontation.
  •  22% have had an experience that ended their friendship with someone.
  •  22% of teenagers log on to their favorite social media site more than 10 times a day. (3)
A recent study from Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project showed that more than nine out of ten teens surveyed regularly spent time online—and about two-thirds of them did so daily. What’s more, 73 percent of teens ages twelve to seventeen used a social networking site like MySpace, Facebook, Bebo, or YouTube."
